A shrine of Mangal and Mahadev
Mangalnath Mandir is among Ujjain’s most visited temples, set along the Shipra. In Hindu tradition and astronomical lore tied to the Matsya Purana, this ground is associated with the birth of planet Mars — Mangal or Angaraka — and with a self-manifested presence of Lord Shiva.
Mythic accounts describe that during a fierce divine struggle, a drop of Shiva’s perspiration fell upon the earth here, giving rise to a linga and to Mangal as Bhauma — born of the earth. Because of this association, devotees from across India travel here for Mangal Dosh nivaran, Bhaat Puja before marriage, and related graha shanti.
Ujjain itself was long regarded as a reference point in Indian astronomy. Clear skies and the sacred geography of Avantika made this riverbank a place where devotion and celestial observation meet. Today the temple remains active from dawn to evening, welcoming pilgrims for simple darshan as well as full ceremonial worship.
Our location
You will find us on Mangalnath Road, near Sandipani Ashram, in Ujjain city (PIN 456006). The setting is open and airy by the river — a quieter pause within the pilgrimage circuit that also includes Mahakaleshwar, Kal Bhairav, and other sacred sites of the city.
